I was actually referring to the "these people need the light" and "I'm giving them my only son" bit. Could it be another version of Christ's story?
An artist from Lubbock who is famous for his comic book paintings did a book about Superman trying to alleviate world hunger. The following link is to a sort of review. It shows that even Superman cannot conquer the sin of men.
